No. 2887
May 20th, 2022

This coming Friday 20th May is an opportunity for Members to pay respect to one of our Club’s elder statesmen. Past District Governor Xanxai Visitkul who passed away on Sunday 15th May after a long battle with cancer.

The Rotary Club of Bangkok South will sponsor the 20th May prayers commencing at 18:30 pm at Sala 30-31 Wat Thatthong, Sukhumvit 63.

Having joined the RCBS in 1968, Past District Governor Xanxai became our Clubs 16th President in 1975-76. He continued his dedication to Rotary and became District Governor of Rotary International District 3350 in 1988-1989. Our Club bestowed upon him Honorary Member status each year since July 2020.

Our condolences go to his wife M.L. Suchira and family.

Our Club continues to attract new Members and not only has it been an eclectic group of characters, it is also reflects a wide range of ages from the 30s to the 80s. We started the Rotary Year last July with 106 Members losing 2 Members from a resignation and a death and we have inducted 9 new Members so far giving us a net 113 current Members as of today. This is a solid number of Members which supports the strong 50-60 attendees we have at each of our Friday meetings and all other Club activities.

Rtn Matthew reminded us to advertise or update our profiles in the 2021-2022 RCBS Annual Yearbook for which he has accepted the task of managing and publishing it this year on behalf of the Club along with Rtn Rakesh and his staff. For this to be a successful process we need advertising support which effectively covers the full cost of publication. Please contact Rtn Matthew if you wish to place an advertisement. (

Next, we heard from Rtn Ragil regarding our Club’s Installation Dinner which will be held on Saturday 25th June at The Montien Hotel. Sign up forms will be on your tables from this Friday so if you could please let us know if you plan to attend.

See you at The Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday 20th May 2022.

Finbarr O'Connor
President 2021-2022

May 13th, 2022
Dr. Michael Ivanovitch is an independent analyst focusing on world economy, geopolitics and investment strategy. He served as a senior economist at the OECD in Paris, international economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and taught economics at Columbia Business School.

The title of his presentation today was titled:

"The Future World Economy"

He started off with the Tom Yam Goong time where the Bank of Thailand was asking how to reduce interest rates.

And that was the beginning of the crisis, big balance of payments crisis, to which Dr Michael did not know the answer.

But the only way to get your interest rates down, is when you get your foreign public debt down and raise your interest rates so that foreign savers or financing, find it interesting to invest back in Thailand.

Asia is a sound growing economy with a net current surplus of payments which means they are a creditor to the rest of the world.

He then proceeds to talk about the USA and how the democrats will lose (he himself is a democrat) during the congressional elections that will happen during the first week of November.

The recession might result in Joe kissing his presidency goodbye, because whoever gets the legislative authority in the United States will control the political agenda for the presidential elections.

The economy is going to take it on the chin and there's no way around it.

US already have numbers for the first quarter. They are kind of bad. One more quarter like that and then they will be in a technical recession and you can imagine how bad that's going to look in the run-up to Congressional elections in November.

He wished that the US had some of the fundamentals that we have in Asia.

Dr. Michael's only worry right now for asia is how these political waves, not financially economic waves, but political waves coming from the west and how they're going to affect Asia.

China, in particular, and one crucial Asian relationship, which is China and Japan.

On the topic of sanctions, his comment is that it is really a third world war.
