THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Whilst being a Rotarian embodies Members to co-exist within Rotary rules, regulations and procedures, it also encompasses an ever changing local Club culture as we say goodbye to one of our older Members this week and welcome a new Member. Our unique Bangkok South culture is ever evolving reflected by a constant admission of much younger Members over the past eighteen months.

The passing of Rtn Mark Shaw on the 8th October is another reminder of just how important our Club is to so many of our Members who engage with fellow Rotarians through Committees, Projects, Luncheons or on Zoom. Rtn Mark achieved 100% Perfect Attendance since he joined us in 2012 and his passing highlighted one of the great attributes of our Club, that is, our openness to embrace Members and support them wherever we can. I am very much aware of how many Members helped Rtn Mark in recent times and this is a reflection of our Rotarian ‘spirit’.

Welcome to our newest Club Member, Rtn Matthew Nekvapil with the Classification of Luxury Publications. I have met with Rtn Matthew along with PE Patrick and I know he will be a great asset to our Club and he has the energy that will be surely tapped to support our Committees and help us to give back to the community.

Secretary Yannick again presented the Board Minutes, this time from our September Board Meeting. Please reach out to myself or any Board Member if you have further questions on any of the Minutes.

The Board is presenting a lot of information this Rotary Year which is enabled due to the online Zoom format. We don’t plan to change our continuous communications as it will create a more open and understood Club especially for newer Members who haven’t had the opportunity to be involved in a Committee or be on the Board. This is not a temporary ‘Zoom agenda’. We will continue to present all of our information even when we return to our regular meetings at The Crowne Plaza.

See you all online on Friday 29th October.

Finbarr O'Connor

COVID outbreak management in a factory

15th October, 2021

Guest Speaker : Rtn Danu Chotikapanich (RC Bangkok)

Our guest speaker Rtn Danu Chotipanich was introduced by PP Mark Butters.

Rtn Danu started by saying his first visit to our club was over 20 years back as an Interactor. That established a quick rapport with us. He started working in Cobra International in 2002 , a company started by his father and 2 German friends in 1978 and is now a world leader in Advanced Composite Products. The company has over 2,000 employees and a production area spread over 100,000 sq. m. ( 12 buildings ). It's products are used in marine, automotive, water sports, and electronics industries.

In their factory they had 610 cases of Covid since the pandemic started, most of these in the last few months. 477 were placed in quarantine. 139 were being treated of which 92 were under home isolation , 30 in a field hospital at the factory and 15 in a local hospital.

They maintain a daily report of infections in each of the buildings This helped in identifying where the outbreak happened. The factory created a strong protocol for health and safety for all employees. More teleconferencing was introduced to reduce face to face meetings. They have about 400-500 Cambodian workers who live in a company owned apartment block. The company provides them with herbal drinks every evening after work so that their immunity is strong besides providing them with alcohol gel, gloves and face masks. Work from home is also encouraged.

As for vaccinations, 85 pct of employees are fully vaccinated and 15 pct have had their first dose. By the end of November they expect 98 pct to be fully vaccinated. A third booster Moderna shot will be given early next year.
What does the company do when a case is reported ?
First make a quick investigation to identify and isolate the people who fall under a high risk category and need to be quarantined. A self-care kit is provided which contains food, medicines , masks, gloves and alcohol gel. This was very useful as local hospitals were not in a position to help very much as the outbreak in the country was also at its peak.

The total cost incurred by the company during the pandemic so far is Baht 14 million. This was spent on vaccines, antigen test kits, antiseptic solution, masks, PPE, salary, etc. They were fortunate in that their business actually flourished and expect to double the watersports production capacity next year. Perhaps because it is an outdoor sport and a single person sport. The order book is full till the end of 2022 and they have been forced to cut deliveries by 25 pct to satisfy all old and new customers. Seems people are saving more as they are travelling less and are willing to spend on such sporting activities !

However, due to restrictions and stoppage in production facilities this year, the company estimates they have lost around Baht 150 million of revenue which means a loss of margin between Baht 60 to 70 million. A benefit resulting from the pandemic though was that the company could diversify their raw material supply base due to spending more time on research and development within the company. An opportunity arose out of the crisis.

He did point out that one cannot rely completely on the government and the bureaucracy in such situations. As an example he said he wanted more AT Kits so they could test the employees on a regular basis to avoid an outbreak again but could not get them and when he did find these, the expense was quite high. Although he could afford it, he was not sure that a lot of factories could. Even access to hospital RT-PCR tests is quite limited.

A certainly interesting and relevant presentation and very well appreciated by our club members.

Rtn Lars Svennson was quite effusive in thanking our guest speaker on behalf of our club.
