We communicate regularly both at our Friday Meetings and in South Wind the extensive number of activities that Members undertake to support the less advantaged in our Thai communities. What is less talked about is the tremendous efforts that are made to raise Charity Funds. I would like to call out Past President Dougie, Service Projects Director Sanjeev and Fund Raising Director Steve who have led various programs to raise much needed charity funds notwithstanding the ‘lockdown’ restrictions that we have all endured. Thank you for your continued leadership in this key activity on behalf of our Club.

We continue to have numbers in the high 40s attending each Friday which is around the same level we had in the 2019-2020 Rotary Year.

Looking out from the lectern, it appears to be the same core Members attending each week relishing Fellowship, good speakers and a three course meal. Additionally, I see many potential new Members engaging on a regular basis and I have no doubt the Club will achieve its annual goal of 110 Members (10% growth) by June 30 2022.

We had updates on upcoming activities via PN Aaron regarding our Paul Harris Fellows Dinner and our 60th Anniversary Lunch whilst PP Nigel gave us an update on this year’s Charity Golf Day.

Secretary Yannick presented a summary of the December 2021 Board Minutes which we will eventually move to an online format that will enable more detailed information to be provided to Members only. Rotary International’s Constitution and therefore our current Constitution requires that Board Minutes are to be presented to Members within 60 days of a Board Meeting. We are achieving this requirement.

Thank you to Service Projects Director Sanjeev for presenting the outstanding efforts of Rtn Poul Weber with regards to refurbished and repurposed hearing aids from Denmark. You can read the details below.

In the meantime, there are Committees and Friday Meetings for you to attend as our Club continues to be as active as we possibly can in the circumstances.

See you all at The Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday 28th January 2022.

Finbarr O'Connor

Giving of yourself to help the less fortunate

Pol Sgt Maj Amornrat Thongpreecha is an impressive 33 year old who, apart from her very successful career as a professor at the Police Academy’s  Special Training Division, is an artist, musician, restaurateur, wildlife protection advocate, furniture maker and avid motorcyclist.  It is her volunteer teaching work, however, with displaced youngsters from underrepresented groups, like Karen youth, through the Princess Sirindhorn educational project initiative in a Ban Khao Chao border school, of which she spoke of with the most emotion.

With a quick overview, the Pol Sgt Maj gave club members an interesting peak into her life and loves.  She was raised by a single mother after losing her father at the age of two, and, while she was interested in an art career, her mother didn’t see a future for her in that field.  Instead, her mother wanted to see her daughter make something of her life and “serve her country like her dad did”.  Thus, the Pol Sgt Maj entered the police academy when she was just 19 after completing boarding school, and she has never looked back.

She has volunteered in the border school for the last 15 years; however, she does not believe that it’s only important to teach reading, writing and arithmetic to the youngsters.  She takes them out to the jungle often to give them a chance to learn from nature, has them practice music and paint. She must be doing something right, as her efforts saw her students win, recently, THB 1 million in an art competition at Siam Paragon which went to their school to fund improvements and provide supplies for the students.

The Pol Sgt Maj had tears in her eyes when she spoke of her numerous interactions with Princess Sirindhorn and noted that it was a scholarship provided by the Princess which allowed her to complete her studies.

In his vote of thanks, Rtn. Sanjeev noted, and everyone agreed, that “our society was fortunate to have someone like the Pol Sgt Maj in its midst who cared and gave so much of herself”.

Re : donation of hearing aids last week

Dear Khun Poul:

Thank you so much for yours and your colleagues’ in Denmark for the hearing aids. We could always do with your generous gifts. In November, we service the elderly in Bangkok when we ask the local agents to help service and supply spare parts. Many elderly are unable to conveniently access the public sector health service and the Foundation organizes a much appreciated one stop service for those in needs. We look forward to your continuing support.

Yours sincerely,

Sook Sanan Jotikasthira
Thank you message to Rtn. Joe Scuderi and RCBS members from Sister Louise (Good Shepherd Foundation) for the donation of a half-ton of rice last week
Dear Rotarians:
I regret not being well enough to meet and welcome you last Saturday. Many thanks again for your rice donation. We received 13 sacks and have already distributed to the different sections for daily consumption.

May God bless and reward your kind and generous hearts and may you and your families be blessed abundantly throughout 2022.

Kind regards,

Sr. Louise Horgan
