Today's Topic : No Lunch Meeting owing to      Christmas Holiday
No. 2868
    24 December, 2021
THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The irony of H.E. Jon Åström Gröndahl, the Swedish Ambassador presenting to us on “Gender equality and why it matters – a Swedish perspective” didn’t escape my attention and for me it segue’s nicely into our Club Assembly on Friday January 14th where amongst other items, we will discuss the results of our 2021 Member Satisfaction Survey. Please make sure you have this date in your diaries for a 11:00 am start prior to our Regular Friday Meeting at 12:30 pm.

Friday the 17th December may have been only our second in-person meeting since April 9th, but it was also our last Meeting for this calendar year. We do not meet again until Friday 7th January 2022, albeit we still have our Club’s Annual Xmas Party on the 23rd December. I look forward to catching up with many Members, Families and Guests at our Xmas Party.

On Friday 7th January at our next Regular Club Meeting we will again have our “New Year Predictions”. It is always a good laugh so please plan to attend.

Planning for 2022 is well and truly underway and there are three events worthy of you attending:

- Thursday       10th February         Paul Harris Fellow Dinner at The Pacific Club

- Thursday       10th March             RCBS Annual Charity Golf Day

- Friday              8th   April              60th Anniversary Extended Lunch

Rtn Worrakit is leading this year’s Annual Charity Golf Day Committee and he provided us with further details along with a video production of PP Dougie to give added support. For all you ‘hackers’ and of course our golfers, please sign up.

We inducted another great Member into our Club who like so many previously already has deep roots with many Members over a long period of time. PP Andrew McPherson introduced Rtn Zafar Vasi noting just how much of a Rotarian he already was going back to Zafar’s days in Mumbai. But the link was his passion for hiking and running hence how he met PP Andrew in Scotland. It is a honour to have Rtn Zafar join our Club. Thank you to Rtn Steve Wilson our Fund Raising Director who was the Proposer.

May you all have a fantastic festive season, enjoy your Xmas and New Year activities and importantly, stay safe and come back to a brighter 2022.

See you all at The Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday 7th January 2022.

Finbarr O'Connor

GENDER EQUALITY AND WHY IT MATTERS :
A SWEDISH PERSPECTIVE

17th December, 2021

Speaker : Swedish Ambassador - Jon Åström Gröndahl
Gender Equality :  Why It Matters -  A Swedish Perspective

Swedish Ambassador to Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, H. E. Jon Astrom Grondahl is a career diplomat who until his current posting to Bangkok in September 2020, spent the last five years in the Swedish Foreign Ministry in the consular affairs bureau.  He is married to a fellow Swedish Ambassador Helena, who held the post of Swedish Ambassador to Jordan a few years ago and has one daughter Hanna, born in 2008.

Introduced by a “member of the club’s Swedish mafia”, Rtn. Jan Cederwell, as a pillar of the Swedish community, great chess player and creative social media user, the Ambassador thanked club members for their warm welcome and noted the friendly atmosphere in the room.

The Ambassador spoke passionately about his professional and personal reasons for promoting gender equality to all.  Personal because of his daughter Hanna, who he feels should be able to celebrate every day as International Women’s Day (as opposed to having it recognized just once a year on March 8), and professionally given the Swedish government’s official foreign international feminist policy which has been in effect since 2014 (followed by similar foreign policies being adopted by Canada, Spain, and Germany).

Sweden’s international feminist foreign policy focuses on three areas of particular concern to women:  rights, resources and representation.
He mentioned how gender equality means to his government and him a world where girls and boys and men and women are given the same possibilities to advance in life.  He noted that the Covid-19 pandemic had been unequally harsh on women and girls, saying that in 2020, 130 million girls did not go to school, 12 million (or 33 thousand a day) under the age of 18 were forced into early childhood marriages, 32 million had unsafe abortions, and loss of employment and gender pay gaps for women had been felt to a much higher degree than by men.   Due to the latter greater female loss of employment, a higher division of labour in the household has been placed on women, too.

The Ambassador said that only 25% of the members of parliament in the world were women while only 26 females were current Head of State. History shows, he said, that when women were involved in negotiating peace agreements, their rate of success was higher.

In his own embassy he lamented the fact that many of his high-ranking local Thai staff, while being women, were single as many had told him that they could not even think about having a family with the unfair burden that tends to put on the female while pursuing a career.  “They told me that it’s impossible to combine a professional career with motherhood”, he said.

Sweden is a model for gender equality providing more than a year off for maternity/paternity leave (in combination) and high quality, affordable child care (THB 3000/month/child), amongst other things. In fact, the Ambassador took advantage of the generous paternity leave in 2008 when Hanna was born, taking six of the “best months of my life to bond with my daughter”.  While Thailand lags behind in this type of leave, he was happy to highlight IKEA here, headed by another Swedish member of our club by the way, which introduced four weeks of paid leave for their workers, a major step forward.

The Ambassador concluded by saying that “gender equality makes sense”.  He said it is smart economics (GDP of a nation goes up when women enter the workforce as opposed to keeping them out), and that high quality, affordable day care as mentioned above, financed by Swedish law with responsibility to the municipalities to step up and offer the child care spaces, allows this to happen more easily.  He noted too, that for gender equality to work, men and boys need to engage and encouraged all club members to take up the mantle for the cause to help Thailand and the world become a greater place for women in our society to be equal in all spheres.
