Today's Topic : Fellowship Lunch at Indus on Sukhumvit 26
No. 2866
    10 December, 2021

After twenty one back to back Zoom Meetings we were able to finally enjoy an in-person Regular Club Meeting at The Crown Plaza Hotel. The 2021-2022 Rotary Year Installation of the President and Board was held online on the 25th June and therefore the 3rd December was a very auspicious event for us as it was the first time we held a face to face Club Meeting and met the Board too. Fifty three Members plus ten visiting Rotarians and Guests provided a great back drop to re-engage the spirit of our Club.

Since January 1, 2020 we have had 46 in-person Regular Club Meetings and 45 Regular Club Meetings via Zoom. Our Membership increased from 101 to 106. It would be fair to say that there were many Members we had not seen for a long long time as Zoom was not their preferred format (understandably).

Friday was a great opportunity to welcome back a lot of our Members. However, Zoom did provide us a platform to stay connected for so many of our Members who travelled overseas and we have made a point of acknowledging them each week. Only a couple of our Members are still overseas and they will be back shortly (Rtn Elmar, Rtn Joe and PP John).

We have continued to bring new Members to our Club and their Inductions have proceeded as best they can online. On Friday we were able to recognise (again) Rotarians Andrew Hamilton, Matthew Nekvapil and Ashwin Chugani.

Last Friday we sent out the 2021 Membership Satisfaction Survey Report to all Members. It is invaluable to get a measurable perspective on what we all think about our Club and key topics that need further exploring. On Friday 14th January 2022 we have called a Club Assembly at 11.00am for Members only at which time we will facilitate a deeper understanding of the Survey so as we can prioritise and act on the most important issues based on input from our Members collectively.

IPP David presented his three 2020-2021 Above & Beyond Awards along with recognition of those Members who achieved 100% Perfect Attendance last Rotary Year. It was another opportunity to bring Members into the spotlight and thank them in-person for all of their achievements.

On Thursday 10th March 2022 we will again have our Annual Charity Golf Event and if you are planning to attend please let us know via the sign-up sheets on your table at our Friday lunch meetings.

There is still a lot more going on with the Club and below is a summary :

Finbarr O'Connor
President 2021-22

On Friday 3rd December many months after the end of the Rotary Year, we were finally able to present the 100% Attendance Awards and the Above and Beyond Awards.
Whilst the changes in the Rotary Constitution are  making it easier to achieve 100% attendance than in previous years with Make-Ups eligible to be counted for any period within the year, the Rotary Constitution has still not gone soft and places a quite clear and stretching responsibility on what every Rotarian needs to do for Rotary in each half year period to keep his membership up-to-date.
In 2020-21, we had 33 members who had achieved 100% attendance and we honoured 23 on them on Friday in 3 Groups as follows.

We also presented the Above and Beyond Awards to the three recipients. These awards were introduced by the Rotary Club of Bangkok South as a way for the President to recognize those members of the club who have performed a task or service which goes above and beyond what would normally be expected from a Rotarian.
The first Above and Beyond Award was to PP Tim Cornwall for Commitment to Service Above Self.

In 2020 when COVID was still relatively new to us all, as our Club President, PP Tim initiated a program to raise money and distribute food boxes to the needy.  Together with other groups he raised over 800,000 THB and led many events with Rotarians where they distributed the food boxes. Although PP Tim would regard this as was simply “what is expected”, to the rest of us it is clearly, “Above and Beyond.”
The second Above and Beyond Award was to Rotarian Frank Crocker for Commitment to Fundraising Efforts.

Last year COVID affected our traditional fund raising campaigns, especially Coins on Silom and made the importance of the Golf Tournament  even more important. PP Nigel came to the microphone regularly, exhorting the club membership to support the event and to sell raffle tickets.  Whilst some members did not allow PP Nigel to interrupt into their luncheon conversations, Rotarian Frank hears the call for action loud and clear and got to work. He accounted for 36 books of tickets sold and almost 5% of the net funds raised. This is going Above and Beyond.
The final Above and Beyond Award was to Rotarian Mark Wolf for the Commitment to the Life of the Club.

Every week the club need a speaker for the Friday program, all year long we are open to new members who share our values and to new sponsors who want to support our programs. To do this we need Rotarians to be proud of being a Rotarian, to be proud of the Rotary Club of Bangkok South and to be proud of being a member of the Rotary Club of Bangkok South and who will actively promote the club to the wider community in Bangkok and tell them all about us.  Rotarian Mark Wolf goes Above and Beyond in all these tasks and barely a week goes by that he doesn’t bring at least one guest to our meetings and he is having also responsible a steady stream of new members that keeps our membership active and vital, he serves on committees and his staff also help at events.
