Today's Topic: Holiday quiz with quizmaster Phil White, Ladies Day with Sister Louise selling her Christmas gifts before and after lunch.
No. 2819
4 DECEMBER 2020
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Fellow Rotarians,

Last Friday, we welcomed Kevin Beauvais on his talk about “Hotels and Tourism in Thailand.” With the effect of Covid, the hotel business is one of the hardest affected industries in the world. The road to full business recovery will be a long and challenging battle. With the recent Covid cases reappearing in Thailand, we should take greater precautions and continue to practice social distancing.

On behalf of PP Mark Butters, I also made the announcement on the newly elected Board of Directors for 2021-22 led by none other than PE Finbarr O’Connor. A friendly reminder that our highly anticipated Christmas dinner at PP Nick’s on 17th Dec is merely two weeks away. If you are planning to join, but haven’t yet signed up, please do so with K.Khob. As of today, we have 71 people confirmed for this special day so it should be another fun experience with great fellowships.

Our meeting this Friday will feature Philip White for a Quiz Day. Furthermore, Sister Louise will also join us to sell her Christmas goodies whereby her students will be singing for us. Since this Friday will also be Ladies’ Day, it will be a perfect opportunity to invite your better half to join this luncheon as well. Due to an urgent family matter, I will not be able to join the meeting, but VP David Record will do a fantastic job as acting President. I hope everyone will enjoy this Friday luncheon.

Have a great weekend.

President Yod Tantianunanont

"HOTELS AND TOURISM IN THAILAND"
Guest Kevin Beauvais, Founder and CEO of Invision Hospitality, addressed the club last week on the hospitality sector in Thailand and surrounding countries. Before heading up his own company, Kevin was CEO of Minor Hotels. Invision’s goal is to bring the hotels it manages to profitability within three months.

As he pointed out at the top of his presentation, no one was prepared for the pandemic and the fallout it would bring to hospitality. The first quarter of the year was “okay,” even without Chinese tourists, but thereafter there has been a steep fall-off. Hotels need to typically exceed 40% occupancy to be profitable. At the moment, China and Singapore are doing well… at more than 75% occupancy. Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand are doing alright. But markets like Thailand, Malaysia, and the Maldives are seeing 20% occupancy rates.

While luxury properties in general are hurting. China’s luxury market YOY is actually up. Some areas, like Sanya, China, are actually doing very well because of limits on international travel. In Thailand, while Phuket is dismal, Hua Hin and Pattaya are okay due to local travel from Bangkok.
Kevin points to the obvious urgency for a vaccine and travel bubbles for the industry to recover. In addition, he mentioned the need for price fixing – so that hotels can get minimum rates and stop killing each other on a race to the bottom.
