Today's Topic:
US Mock Election Debate
No. 2814
30 OCTOBER 2020

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Fellow Rotarians,

I hope everyone had a well rested Friday last week as we had no meeting due to the public holiday. Prior to that, we had a great program with Dr.Sirilaksana where she presented about the Road to Justice in Thailand. Despite the fact that we had the privilege of welcoming Dr.Sirilaksana to our club on numerous occasions in the past, her insights and continuous efforts have never failed to astonish us.

We are now approaching the end of October and I can assure you that we still have a lot of great programs ahead. All the committees under my Board of Directors are busy organizing and managing their tasks. As such, we will be announcing various plans to the club in the foreseeable future.

This Friday will feature another interesting internal program as we welcome our finely selected Rotarians to conduct the US Mock Election debate. This should present a perfect opportunity for us to see how our Mock debate can accurately reflect the upcoming real US Election.

Looking forward to seeing many Rotarians this Friday.

Have a great and enjoyable weekend.

Dr. SIRILAKSANA KHOMAN

DR. SIRILAKSANA KHOMAN – THE ENDEMIC CORRUPTION IN THAI SOCIETY

Our very engaging speaker today was Dr Sirilaksana Khoman who talked about successes in fighting corruption in Thailand, updates about on-going cases and closed with a wish list that would make the fight against corruption more effective.

As with her other times visiting and talking to the club, her comments about past and on-going cases are best left from this review and limited to those lucky enough to hear her talk.

As those who have heard her in the past, many will be familiar with her enthusiasm for and joy in her work, clearly coming from her impressive background and exceptional achievements.

Dr Sirilaksana is former Advisor to the Commissioner and Chair of the Economic Sector Corruption Prevention at Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission. Before joining the NACC, she was the Dean, Faculty of Economics, Thammasat University.

She received her Bachelor and Master’s in Economics from the Australian National University and her PhD in Economics from the University of Hawaii, followed by a Certificate in International Trade Regulations from Harvard Law School.

She has done extensive work for international organizations including the Word Bank, UNESCAP, WHO and UNODC. She has taught at the Australian National University, the United Nations University in Tokyo, and the University of Oregon.

She also served two terms on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Anti-Corruption and Transparency. She has authored books and articles, particularly on the Economics of Corruption.

She is currently on the Word Economic Forum’s Network of Experts, and International Consultant for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

One area, safe to share, sheds light on changes she would like to have come about to make the work more effective. First, she would like to see feasibility studies and contracts dealing with large government projects disclosed in full, not just two-page summaries. Second, big data mining is also on her wish list as is her third wish, the introduction of regulations for organizations without sufficient oversight.
