Today's Topic: Chris Bruton on "My Half-Century in Thailand: 50 Years and Still Learning"
No. 2809

Fellow Rotarians,

Last week, we took the time to enjoy a rather full program at our luncheon as we started off with the induction of another member, PP Christoph Leonhard, a Rotarian transferring from RC Royal Hua Hin. IPP Tim then took over the stage as he handed out various tokens of appreciation to recognize many generous sponsors of CoS and golf, followed by the highlight of the program as PP John Quarmby and Rtn.Klaus Feilkas presented our notable CDWS projects. We then ended the luncheon with an entertaining classification interview in which VP John Casella interviewed/semi-grilled our very own Rtn.Varin Sachayan. The details of the programs can be seen below.
The next few weeks are looking quite busy for our club as we have many good programs, club’s activities, many potential new members hoping to join our club, and another wonderful fellowship dinner at PP Niti’s residence scheduled for Saturday 26th September. In addition, I will be meeting with DG Somsri this Saturday and we will have our Board Meeting on Monday. I shall keep our members posted on important announcements.
This Friday, we will welcome Chris Bruton on “My half-century in Thailand: 50 years and still learning.” As usual, we shall look forward to welcoming as many of our fellow Rotarians as possible.
Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

PP Mark Butters introduced a new member from our daughter club RC Royal Hua Hin. PP Christoph  Leonhard. PP Christoph's educational background includes a degree as a specialist in hotel management from Hamburg, Germany. He also holds certificates from Cornell in hospitality and digital marketing.
PP Christoph moved to Thailand in 2000. He has worked for the Amari Watergate, Peninsula, Sofitel Silom, and as GM for the Amari Reef Koh Samui and at the Amari Hua Hin – he then temporarily left Thailand for the Maldives and then returned as GM of the Verandah High Resort in Chiang Mai and is now the GM of the Oriental Residence in Bangkok.
He served as President of Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin in 2015 / 2016 and is an advanced open water diver . His classification is Hotel residential.
PP Christoph commented to the club that he’s excited to return to Rotary, and that RCBS is his first “city” club and looks forward to making a difference. He first became involved because of his support of an orphanage in Koh Samui.

PP John Quarmby and Rotarian Klaus discussed the water systems donations. Target schools are outside major towns and cities where water typically comes from a well making dry season a challenge.

Poor water quality can induce school dropouts, perpetuating a cycle of poverty. Schools were recently visited in Trat and Mae Sot. A system is expected to run for five years.
Rotarian Varin, classification, Real Estate, was interviewed by Rotarian John Casella. Varin’s family has lived here for 3.5 generations and has three children.  He went to school in Bangkok – the same class as P Yod at St. Dominick’s, where he did “not” beat up P Yod and steal his lunch money.
His first job was as an actor in a soap opera, appearing in 5 or 6 shows performing various villainous acts. He has trouble picking his favorite sport among UFC, cycling, football, and golf.  He has a side venture owning a gun shop with “hundreds of guns". His favorite gun? Colt. Varin explained that with a rare special permit you can conceal carry, otherwise the gun and ammunition must be separated. And guns can only be sold to Thais, not foreigners… unless anyone’s wife is in the market.
Varin thanked the Club for welcoming him.

Meetings were held with staff and students at the Sotsuksa Theppharat School for the Deaf on Suan Luang Beach in Bang Saphan. The first meeting on 31 August was attended by Rotarians and friends to assess the schools needs and explain what Rotary was prepared to offer. During that meeting it was explained by School Director Khun Waraporn Jungsuwadee that of the 115 students total, 30 also suffer from mental disabilities. One hundred students live at the school full time. Fifteen commute from the nearby community.

CP Alan and his wife Wanna returned to the school on 9 September to hand over 56 hearing aids and learn more about the school. Hearing loss among most of the students ranges from moderate to severe in one or both ears. Some have profound loss that cannot be corrected with hearing aids. It was estimated that about 60 students can benefit from the donated hearing aids. Of the students we met, some were so excited about the donation they wanted to immediately try using a hearing aid.
