MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Fellow Rotarians,

We had a double session last Friday with both a Club Assembly and our usual Friday Programme both held on Zoom.

I was delighted that we held the Club Assembly on Zoom; each Board Director was given a good opportunity to explain what their Committees had done during the past twelve months and we had a much bigger turnout than in previous years. Thank you to all the Board who had prepared so well for the meeting and to the forty plus members who joined our Club Assembly.

At our Friday meeting, PP Mark gave the third reading of the nomination of Rotarian Patrick “Shrimp” Gauvain to be the President of our Club in the Rotary Year 2022-23 and this Friday’s meeting will make it official (barring any last minute shenanigans) and we will also hear who PE Finbarr’s board would like to replace him as Vice President.

PDG Alex also reminded everyone that for just $65 they can attend the Global Rotary Convention, details are on-line and below in South Wind.

Our programme included two very entertaining classifications. Rotarian Lars Svensson was interviewed by Rotarian Ola Holmgrem and Rotarian Joe Ravenscroft was interviewed by Rotarian David Ravenscroft. Rotarian Sanjeev also revealed the origins of the line Rotarian Joe had used at his induction “The past is history; the future is a mystery and the present is a gift – that’s why they call it the present.” Who would ever have thought that Kung Fu Panda was a source of such wisdom?!

This Friday we are back to welcoming external speakers for the programme. Klonnious Blamo, a Rotary Peace fellow from Liberia will be getting up early in his home country to speak to us all about “Building Resilience in a Culturally, Structurally, and Physically Discriminative Society”.

I hope to see many of you online on Friday.

Have a great weekend

President David Record

LARS SVENSSON
INTERVIEWED
BY OLA HOLMGREM
Lars Svensson under the microscope!
His Classification is Retail Management. He grew up in Thailand and Sweden and spent most of his working life in countries like Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. He was an army officer, gardener, luggage handler, marketing and communications specialist and many other bizarre jobs including running IKEA. Lars’ father worked around the world for International Development Agencies and first came to Thailand in 1971 when he was 5. “We also spent about 3 years in Ethiopia, so I really had got the travel bug... and focused on work opportunities that could be applied overseas.”
Lars is adept in languages and spent time learning Thai, Bahasa Indonesian and Malaysian. He received his scholarship by recounting an incident when he was stopped at customs with an aphrodisiac, Obaqua (that apparently works) that was thought to be ganja. With his little knowledge of the language he convinced the custom officers and they let him go... and thus received the scholarship on the basis that it was useful for cross cultural knowledge and relationships..! He then joined IKEA in Singapore, moved to the Malaysian office then back to Sweden, where he met his current wife, Katarina, who happened to be adopted from Thailand living in Sweden since she was very young. My children are 14 and 16 years old, so I am the only non-Thai in the family. Lars spend some time running a gambling business in Australia which failed, flew to Singapore where he restarted his life with his wife. He then moved to Thailand, rejoined IKEA. His real focus, however, is social entrepreneurship and working with sustainability... integrating it into the organizations he works with.
JOE RAVENSCROFT
INTERVIEWED BY DAVID RAVENSCROFT
Joe Ravenscroft was gently grilled by his brother, David!
Rtn. David began by identifying Joe’s Classification as Research & Development Advisory. Joe began his education in Fleetwood on the Northwest coast of England, where he received his BA in International Business, that required him to do one year overseas and chose Stuttgart in Germany in a publishing house. After he left University he and David and the third brother took a Yacht-master’s course full of adventure, and shortly thereafter bought a ticket sailing to 7 stops around the world... the first stop being Bangkok.... where he fell in love with Thailand and wanted to ‘live the dream’..! He traveled on to Australia and finally back to the UK. He worked for a while in Korea and China and then returned to Bangkok where his brothers lived. He’s a keen snowboarder, cyclist, and recently took up kayaking. Joe is still single.
FINAL CLUB ASSEMBLY 2020-21
via Zoom for the 1st time in RCBS History

DEJÀ VOUS… IS IT YOU?
SOUTH WIND UPDATE - AN ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY!
The Club has had no revenue from South Wind for the past 2+ years, so it is our intention to revamp and reintroduce new advertising rate structures to support the club. At the amazing rate of Baht 3,000 (approx.THB 58 a week) you can place a banner ad for the whole year… and similarly a full size ad for Baht 7,000 per annum (approx.THB 134 a week). Commencing June 4th South Wind will remove all unpaid ads… so we look forward to a plethora of fresh new ads! Sponsors logos will remain. For more information please contact Rtn. Patrick ()
PRESIDENT NOMINEE - 2022-23 - THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT
In accordance to the by-laws of RCBS, this is the third of three announcements for the nomination of Rtn. Patrick Gauvain as President Elect for 2022-23. This notification will be published in Southwind three times, and subject to any challenges will be formally confirmed as PN on 28th May 2021 during the weekly Zoom meeting. Any questions should be addressed to the Chair of the Nominating Committee, PP Mark Butters

PETER’S POP-UP UNIVERSE!
Strange things happen on Zoom calls with variable backgrounds…. space environments, beach scenes (read Moto-san) and Bangkok jails… but not to be outdone Rtn. Upperton decided that spying on deer by popping up through the grass could be quite a novel look..!
