Khun Khob lovingly prepares the President for another RCBS meeting

Fellow Rotarians,

Earlier this week we held our annual PHF Dinner in the classically themed ambiance of the Pacific City Club.

This was a very enjoyable evening. With a new format of club members only, 47 active members attended, which is a very high percentage of the active members within our club. From the feedback, I received at the time and afterwards, the evening was a great success with the venue, the invitation list and agenda meeting most of our member’s expectations. I think that those Rotarians who chose not to attend missed out on a great evening of fellowship as well as experiencing Rotarian Ragil Capone’s red socks. Thank you to PP Don for putting in the hard work to arrange such a pleasurable evening for us all, Rotarian Sanjeev for being such a well-organized MC, and to the Programme Committee for such an entertaining speaker ( I hope the garlic kept him safe as he went past the graveyards on the way home..!) Whoever takes on the responsibility of organizing the 2022 PHF dinner would do well to consider replicating what PP Don put together on Tuesday. “If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it” comes to mind.

Last Friday, we had a big turnout to witness two of the ‘big cats’ of the club circle each other at the microphone. PP Mike Doyle was looking for the inside scoop on PE Finbarr O’Connor’s plans for the coming year and PE Finbarr shared some stories from his youth, what brought him to Thailand and eventually to our Rotary Club, as well as some faded love letters. The audience was given some early ideas of what PE Finbarr’s priorities are going to be in 2021-22…. Interesting times ahead.

This Friday we will have an external speaker, Dr. Manoon Leechawengwong who will update us on “The Thai Government’s COVID Response”.

I look forward to seeing everyone this Friday.

Have a great weekend

President David Record
P David began by introducing one of Thailand’s leading litigators, Michael Doyle, who is searching for the truth about President Elect, Finbarr O’Connor....

PP Mike began with indicating that he wanted all Rotarians to know Finbarr a little more, as currently he’s only really known as a captain of industry, business manager, etc... but this is not the guy we want hear about. So Finbarr began...

“I was born in Perth in 1958, and over the years migrated to Melbourne which is where I now call home. Obviously I’m Australian but I been living outside Australian for 19 years, My father came to Australia from Ireland; he was a doctor and met my mother who was a nurse and I’m the youngest of 5 boys. Unlike most Australians I am not so much the outdoor type, in fact my hobby is collecting cook books and have a collection of over 800. I’m obsessed with finding various different types, especially Portuguese... and I have some famous ones, autographed ones... and yes, I’m a good cook..!"

Twice divorced (second one was a real bitch!) Finbarr recalled when his first wife found a pile of love letters covered with hearts and lipstick kisses... and they were all from his girlfriend that caused the divorce and then married the girlfriend.  Oddly enough, while the first wife cost him a house she still remains his best friend.

“Mike thinks I’m a serious character... but actually he’s wrong, I’m a determined character and every time someone puts a hurdle in front of me I take up the challenge”. When he joined the Ford Motor Company... a family run business... in 1986 he had no degree so he got one, then he got a masters, then he was challenged about overseas experience so he went to Japan and then ended up in the regional head office in Bangkok 2006. He moved on to Goodyear, which he described as a ‘hateful’ organization and a totally different culture.

Mike continued. “I believe you’re the only person in the history of RCBS that doesn’t drink alcohol... what the story behind this?” It turned out that the last time Finbarr drank was in 1986 celebrating the birth of his new daughter, and made the pledge never to drink again... no rhyme or reason... Irish madness!

Finbarr joined Rotary through PP Andrew and at the time had no idea what Rotary was... but after several visits and a little pressure finally became a member. When questioned on leadership and if his style was too corporate he responded “I don’t say to you.. you can’t be what you are and you can’t be your personality and you can’t do your style... and my guess is that diversity is heavily weighted towards personality... bottom line is I will always listen to the argument and can easily be persuaded to change my mind for a good reason!” Finbarr believes he’s selected a Board for this coming year of individuals who will get on with the task at hand without having to be told. He iterated the importance of engaging and finding what it is about Rotary that you like that works for you and leveraging it. Some of his priorities as President will be looking for acquiring members, engaging members, and retaining members.

PP Mike culminated with what he called his Lie Detector ’one word answers” to questions given... but as Finbarr so eloquently retorted on one occasion “... could you say that again in English…?” A question this writer has been struggling throughout this narrative! Indeed, an eclectic grilling!
