Over the past seven years, The Rotary Club of Bangkok South (RCBS) has been involved in an initiative to create self-sustaining projects in low-income communities in Bangkok.

These communities are made up of honest, genuine people who are hungry for opportunity. They do not want to leave their communities but want the chance to improve them. These projects help people help themselves by giving them the dignity of earning their own money. In doing so, the projects have an immediate, continuous impact on lives.

Examples of the projects that RCBS has sponsored include:

Catfish Farms; Tropical Fish Farms; Goat Farms; Sheep Farms; Bakeries; Dress Making; Artificial Flower Production; Brick Making; Computer Classes; Fiberglass Molding; English Classes.

We provide concepts, start-up money and training (if necessary) and then allow the communities themselves to administer the project. The members of the communities who do the work get nominal salaries, while all profits from the enterprises go to a cooperative bank to be shared by everyone in the community. Some of these funds are used to pay for the education of children in these low-income communities.

Other projects in Low Income Communities have focused on education facilities (refurbishment of areas into classrooms, in one case a whole new classroom building, provision of educational equipment and materials) and facilitation of retail opportunities (such as the furnishing and fit out of a co-op store, a community gallery and a cafe).

Our most recent project was in conjunction with funding of THB 550,000 from the CIMB Foundation of CIMB Bankin Thailand.

This funded the purchase of 13 computers, related equipment, multimedia systems and new furniture, as well as a general refurbishment, for the KSN Low Income Community IT Learning Centre in Huay Kwang District, Bangkok.

This will allow approximately 1,200 students and low-income people to have access to IT education resources.
